Luxury Japan Holidays

Futuristic skylines, enduring cultural traditions & epic natural landscapes

The best way to describe Japan is using its most well-known cuisine, sushi. Imagine yourself at a sushi counter, watching dish after dish float past; a plate piled high with neon-lit skyscrapers, followed by a traditional soup bowl of communal hot spring baths.

Each dish is quintessentially Japanese, whilst the flavours are rich, diverse and often unexpected.

Japan has so much to offer, with a history and culture so far removed from the West, you won’t believe you’re still on the same planet.

Japan’s landscapes range from sparkling cityscapes to snow-capped mountain territories, to tranquil gardens of cherry blossoms and koi carp.

The country’s history features ancient feudal castles, Hiroshima and Miyajima, and centuries-old traditions of geisha and samurai; the modern devastation of World War II and a contemporary rebirth into the land of rising technological advances.

Equally as contrasting and paradoxical, the Japanese are suited businessmen playing arcade games in Tokyo’s Akihabara, monks meditating in the hills of Koya-san, young girls in the mad-genius fashions of Harajuku and the hospitable ryokan hosts of rural onsen towns.

Therefore, the task of putting together a Japan holiday itinerary that best showcases the multi-sided dice of Japanese experience is not easy.

Best times to visit Japan

Japan has quite extreme seasons: hot and humid summers and bitterly cold, snowy winters (some of the northern regions and islands are popular skiing destinations during the winter months). Therefore, the best times to visit Japan are spring and autumn, though these are also the most popular. You'll see the gorgeous colours brought about by candyfloss-like blossoms (sakura) during this cherry blossom season, and rich warm hues of the changing leaves – both of which create picturesque settings in Japan’s parks, castle grounds and rural areas.

The Sakura festival in March involves the whole of Tokyo leaving their offices to admire the blooming of the pretty cherry blossom trees in Shinjuku Gyoen Park. The snow festival in Sapporo, Hokkaido is a wintertime wonderland, with hundreds of ice sculptures lit up and a magical experience for children and adults.

Where to go in Japan

You'll visit some of the world's biggest and most exciting mega-cities on your luxury holiday to Japan. Superlative Tokyo, relaxed Osaka and sophisticated Kyoto each offer something slightly different, from modern skyscrapers to ancient temples to eccentric fashion boutiques. Japan's rural regions are often overlooked by first-timers, but once you've reclined in the mineral-rich thermal waters of a mountain onsen, you'll be looking to explore more of this country's countryside. Scenic highlights include the Mount Fuji views of Hakone, the commanding cliffs of Shikoku's Iya Valley and the peaceful mountain-top monasteries of sacred Mount Koya.

There are also the destinations which defy categorisation while exploring Japan: the creative art project that is Naoshima Island, the tragic history (and subsequent rebirth) of Hiroshima, as well as mechanical dolls atop Takayama Festival's biannual procession of floats. Japan is a truly diverse country, filled with all kinds of surprises.
